Shrouding for Natural Burial or Cremation

In today’s context, shrouds are a component of the natural burial process that is available to everyone at a handful of cemeteries in the Edmonton area. They require a sturdy wood tray or backboard insert for lowering and moving the deceased. Shrouds can also be used when someone is to be cremated.

When we’re born, our first experience is to be swaddled – wrapped in a cozy cloth that offers a sense of care and comfort. A burial shroud is pretty much the same experience - for the other end of life. It is care and comfort in the wrapping of a loved one in their last swaddle. Burial shrouds assist in the final act of wrapping a loved one in a cloth, sheet or blanket as they’re prepared for their final rest.

Historically, burial shrouds have been a practice for a variety of cultures and religions. In ancient times, they were made from animal hides.

Reasons you may wish to use a burial shroud

You may seek a completion piece at time of death care, through hands-on involvement.

Shrouding is a reflection of personal choice and thoughtful care.

For home death, shrouding can be a meaningful ritual component for family members or closest friends before the decedent leaves home for their last time.

A burial shroud offers you the opportunity to add a personal touch, share your creativity and provide a physical manifestation of your love and care.

For example, some of the burial shrouds I’ve had the privilege to work with were quilted works of love. Shrouds can be embroidered, painted or woven. Embellishing a shroud is only limited by creative expression. A few cloths have had extraordinary works of art painted or printed on them. Further, some shrouds incorporate jewelry, pouches for small items, or pieces of nature, like lavender or spruce sprigs.

A burial shroud can also be a simple 100% cotton fitted sheet that is appropriately sized and wrapped well. There are tricks to wrapping, as such. I have a good husband who has allowed me to use him as my decedent through the years. Girlfriends, too. Just a couple who would willingly work with me to figure it out. lol

Each shroud represents the desire of loved ones to express their hearts to those who have passed or are preparing for end of life.

Just like caskets, shrouds range in pricing. A simple muslin shroud generally begins in the $750. range – more cost effective than caskets.

In body burial, shrouds and our human remains break down quickly – unlike traditional burial options which will include concrete vaults, metal caskets and toxic chemicals through embalming.
